The Book

A short story

There once was an old man who had a wonderful book. When his Son was old enough to leave the home and live on his own, the old man gave the book to his Son and said “here is a collection of wisdom to guide you in your life”. The young man held the book for a moment and then put it on the shelf because he was too eager to make his own way in life.

Unfortunately the young man encountered many troubles in the years to come. His crops did not grow and he often found himself hungry. His family struggled to be kind to one another and they spent much of their time angry. He never went very far in his education or his career. And most of all he felt an emptiness in his heart.

The young man became an old man after many troubled years and as he approached the end of his life, he would often sit and think about all of his troubles. One day when he was sitting, he looked up and saw the book on the shelf that his Father had given to him. It was old and dusty. He took the book and began to read it. In the book he found wisdom about how to grow crops. “I wish I had known this when I was younger,” he thought, “maybe I would not have been hungry so often.” Another chapter had wisdom about how to lead a family, love your wife, and encourage respect with your children. “I wish I had known this when I was younger,” he thought, “maybe my family would still talk to each other and spend time together.” There were lots of other chapters with wisdom about things like building a career, strengthening friendships, and finding meaning and purpose in life.

As he read the book he realized he had learned many things the hard way. So he wrote a new chapter about what he had learned in his own life and added it to the end of the book. He took the book to his son and told him how wonderful it was. Then he gave the book to his son to read. His son thanked his Father, held the book for a moment, and then placed it... on the shelf.

---------

The old man is everyone who lived before you. The book is the wisdom that they wrote down in many forms. And you, my friend, are the Son.
